Specificity of the Park

Terrestrial National Park classified as a World Heritage Site, refuge of plants and animals of the forest massif of the Middle East of Madagascar, low-altitude forest, mountain forest, high-altitude grassland, population of lemurs, population of Ravenea glauca palm.

The Fauna of Andrigitra Park

108 species of birds, 29 species of Micromammals, 15 species of lemurs, 79 species of amphibians, and 50 species of reptiles, 8 species of carnivores, 50 species of non-voting mammals.

The Flora of Andrigitra Park

1000 species of plants are known within the Andringitra National Park. The vegetation differs depending on the forest, dense humid at low altitude or at medium altitude. But the vegetation of the mountains is the most interesting: the trees are small, more branched with a tendency to sclerophylly.

How to get there

By the RN7 (towards Tuléar), turnoff at Ambalavao or Tanambao (35 km from Ambalavao towards Ihosy along the RN7), then 47 km from Ambalavao or 25 km from Tanambao-on a secondary road, passable all year round, but with the existence of a rain barrier. The road can be closed until 12H after a heavy rain. A toll has been set up by the local population to ensure its maintenance. Approximate travel time from Antananarivo: 10 hours of driving minimum

Location of the Park

GPS: between 22°07’South – 22°21’South and 46°47’ – 47°02’East. Its central part is approximately 140 km from the Tropic of Capricorn. The Andringitra National Park is located in the Haute-Matsiatra Region, the regional capital of which is Fianarantsoa. Area: 31,160 ha Region: Ihorombe

Climate

Humid tropical with high rainfall on the eastern slope with an average annual temperature of 21°C, tropical at high altitudes with temperatures from -7°C to 25°C, seasonal climate towards the west with an average temperature of 24.5°C.

Relief

Located on a very high crystalline plateau, made up of magmatic granite to the east and Amboropotsy gneiss to the west.

History

A Strict Nature Reserve in 1927, it was given the status of National Park in 1999. It is one of the six parks classified in 2007 as World Natural Heritage of the Atsinanana forests.
